How Diwali Celebrates in India

 Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is that the day I most eagerly anticipate per annum. Decorating our home with lights and flowers, eating delicious food, buying and wearing new clothes. 

What’s to not love? A previous couple of Diwalis became infinitely more significant, as I’m creating new traditions with my young son, Veer. This year, Diwali falls on Saturday, Nov. 14, and native celebrations begin Nov 5 in many parts of Washington.

For practicing Hindus, this ancient festival marks the defeat of the evil Ravana by Lord Rama and Sita. So I buy a prayer kit for Diwali in USA. For me, as a parent, the festival’s significance has grown. 

In the world of dark, Diwali is a practice to celebrate with loved ones and family. It is a practice to triumph the excellence over evil and it stands as a beacon of sunshine and hope.

 Indian sweets for Diwali

Speaking of food, feasting is a crucial part of typical Diwali celebrations. During my childhood, my mother would prepare some fried bread for me with potato curry. Also an entire host of Indian desserts.

Every family has its own traditions about meals, but sweets always take center stage in Diwali. For greetings, I prepare my mother’s halwa recipe, a simple-sounding and delicious dessert made from flour, butter, and sugar. Here in Seattle, it’s easy for the vacation to return and go like all other days.

Each Family around the world celebrates this festival differently. Some of them prepare patterns made from colored rice or sand (Rangoli) on the days of Diwali.

How South India Celebrates Diwali

People begin the day with an oil bath before sunrise. Elders apply oil on the heads of the younger relations. In parts of Tamil Nadu, it's customary to eat a touch of lehyam (a medicinal preparation).

People clean their homes and decorate them with kolam designs. Kolam is analogous to rangoli but made using rice flour.

Offerings made to the gods include betel leaves, betel nuts, plantain, flowers. It also includes sandal paste, kumkum, gingelly oil, turmeric powder, and many other Indian Spices for Diwali.

People eat sweets, and crackers are burst within the morning.

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana people celebrate this day because of the victory of Lord Sathyabama over Narakasura. It also marks the closing of accounts for agrarian businesses. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi is additionally worshipped within the morning.

However, in Hyderabad’s Osmania University, students and school members mourn the death of Narakasura annually today.

Students, some sections of the staff, and former faculty members, including writer Kancha Illaiah Shepherd, are celebrating the festival since 2011.

They say that the Narakasura was a Dalit king and a nature lover who was unjustly killed on today. To mourn him, students erect idols of the asura and sing his praises.

According to students, Naraka’s lore isn't dated. In Telangana Karimnagar and Khammam, Adivasis are worshipping the asura for an extended time. 

Diwali in North India

In the North, Diwali festivities start at Dussehra. There are numerous beliefs and rituals related to this Diwali festival. But most common of them are lighting our homes, temples, and even government buildings with small clay lamps or candles. Firecrackers thought to daunt evil spirits also are used with abandon, which makes this a specific popular festival for youngsters.

On Diwali day, shops are open till the afternoon, believing that good sales on Diwali day predict a prosperous year ahead. Within the corporate sector, the Employers distributes Diwali gifts several days before the Diwali, and then slowly picks up pace.
